Lexus has unveiled the 2025 LX 700h, introducing a hybrid powertrain to its flagship luxury SUV lineup for the first time. This new model builds on the strengths of the LX series, combining powerful performance with advanced hybrid technology, alongside a new off-road-focused Overtrail trim that aims to elevate the off-roading experience.
Enhanced Hybrid Powertrain for Performance and Efficiency
At the heart of the LX 700h is a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a total of 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. This setup marks a significant power increase compared to the non-hybrid LX 600, which offers 409 horsepower. The hybrid system includes a nickel-metal hydride battery placed under the rear floor, enabling a balanced distribution of weight and improved center of gravity. Despite its enhanced power, the hybrid model achieves a fuel economy of 20 miles per gallon (mpg) in combined driving, a slight improvement over the LX 600’s 19 mpg.
This hybrid configuration also incorporates an alternator and a starter motor, ensuring that the vehicle remains functional even if the hybrid system encounters issues. This design provides an extra layer of reliability, particularly useful in remote areas where repair facilities may not be immediately available. Lexus aims for a balance between performance and efficiency, offering a robust driving experience without compromising on fuel economy.
Introducing the Rugged Overtrail Trim
In addition to the new hybrid powertrain, Lexus has introduced the Overtrail trim for the LX 700h, catering to adventure enthusiasts who value off-road capability. The Overtrail trim is designed with specialized features, including front and rear locking differentials, a skid plate for underbody protection, and 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels. The trim also boasts a distinctive Earth brown exterior with blacked-out accents and dark gray trim, giving it a rugged yet refined look.
The Overtrail model is equipped with a 2,400-watt AC inverter, allowing drivers to power electronic devices while camping or exploring off the beaten path. It can also be configured with either two-row or three-row seating options, offering versatility for both families and adventure seekers. Inside, the Overtrail’s interior features semi-aniline leather in black or Stone Brown, complemented by open-pore wood trim, creating an atmosphere of luxury even in the roughest terrains.
Off-Road Capabilities and Advanced Technology
The LX 700h retains its off-road DNA with a full-time four-wheel-drive system, Multi-Terrain Select, and Active Height Control. The hybrid system enhances this capability, allowing the SUV to operate in electric-only mode at low speeds, providing smooth and controlled movement on rocky or uneven surfaces. This functionality is particularly beneficial for navigating challenging environments such as steep slopes, deep snow, or loose gravel.
Lexus has made structural adjustments to accommodate the hybrid system, such as repositioning the battery and reinforcing the frame. This ensures that the vehicle maintains its high ground clearance and approach angles, essential for serious off-road driving. The hybrid battery is securely housed in a waterproof compartment beneath the cargo area, enabling the LX 700h to wade through water depths of up to 700mm.

Inside the cabin, the LX 700h offers a range of luxury features designed to enhance comfort and convenience. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an improved wireless charging pad are now standard across the LX lineup. Premium models of the LX 700h also feature “refresh seats,” which include multiple massage modes, catering to both driver and passenger comfort during long journeys.
Safety is a priority in the LX 700h, with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 now standard. This suite includes advanced driver-assistance features such as pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, radar cruise control, and emergency steering assist. These technologies aim to make driving safer and more intuitive, whether in city traffic or on remote trails.
Anticipated Arrival and Market Position
The 2025 Lexus LX 700h is set to go on sale in early 2025, though pricing details remain under wraps. With the non-hybrid LX 600 starting at approximately $93,910, the LX 700h is expected to command a premium for its hybrid powertrain and additional off-road capabilities. This model is positioned as a versatile option for those seeking the combination of Lexus luxury, hybrid efficiency, and rugged adventure-readiness.
