PM Modi and PM Wong Inaugurate PSA Mumbai Terminal Phase-II

The new Mumbai Terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. This joint India–Singapore project marks a big step in India’s port expansion and trade growth. The Mumbai Terminal is set to double handling capacity, speed up cargo movement, and strengthen India’s position as a global shipping hub.

New Mumbai Terminal at JNPT Mumbai

The PSA Mumbai Terminal is one of the largest port development projects in India. Located at JNPT, it serves as a gateway for more than half of India’s container traffic. With Phase-II now operational, the port’s annual capacity has nearly doubled, making it a crucial link for international trade.

Port Capacity Doubled for Trade

The expansion means the port can now handle up to 9.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, compared to earlier capacity. This boost will directly support exporters and importers, reduce waiting times, and make India’s logistics sector more competitive. Experts believe this will cut costs and enhance India’s global trade efficiency.

Modern Cranes and Faster Loading

Equipped with advanced ship-to-shore cranes, automated yard systems, and improved safety measures, the Mumbai Terminal is designed for faster loading and unloading. The technology allows quick turnaround for vessels, which is essential for keeping trade flowing smoothly in today’s competitive shipping industry.

Direct Rail Link for Smooth Cargo

One of the biggest advantages of the new terminal is its direct rail link to the national freight corridor. This connection ensures that cargo can be transported quickly to inland cities without delay. The double-stack rail facility also allows larger cargo volumes to be moved at once, reducing dependence on road transport.

India–Singapore Joint Project

The PSA Mumbai Terminal is managed by PSA International, a Singapore-based company, in partnership with Indian authorities. This reflects the strong trade and strategic ties between India and Singapore. Both leaders highlighted how the project will serve as a model for future collaborations in infrastructure and economic development.

Boost for Shipping and Economy

The new expansion will not only strengthen India’s shipping industry but also contribute to job creation, local business opportunities, and foreign investments. It supports the government’s “Make in India” and “Ease of Doing Business” goals by making trade routes smoother and more efficient.

Final Takeaway

The inauguration of PSA Mumbai Terminal Phase-II is more than just a port expansion — it is a symbol of India’s growing global trade ambitions. With world-class infrastructure, faster cargo movement, and strong India–Singapore cooperation, the project is expected to transform the logistics landscape and boost the Indian economy in the years ahead.
