Netflix has reportedly chosen David Fincher to direct the English adaptation of its Korean breakout series, Squid Game. According to a report by Deadline, Fincher will helm a version of the 2021 thriller series set in the US.

No additional details of David Fincher’s adaptation of Squid Game have been confirmed, though it’s reported that Dennis Kelly will likely serve as screenwriter. Known for scripting the British thriller series Utopia, Kelly brings a strong background in suspense-driven storytelling to the project. Initial reports suggested David Fincher was developing a film adaptation of Squid Game, but recent updates confirm it will be a series.

David Fincher has been with Netflix since its early days, directing two episodes of House of Cards in 2018. He went on to helm the psychological crime series Mindhunter (2017-2019) and produced the animated anthology Love, Death & Robots, which premiered in 2019. His last couple of directorial projects, including the Oscar-nominated Mank (2020) and The Killer starring Michael Fassbender, were also released by Netflix.

The Squid Game genre is familiar territory for Fincher, who previously directed The Game (1997), a mystery thriller with a similar premise where a protagonist finds himself in a dangerous, immersive game that closely mirrors real life.
