A heartbreaking case of NEET aspirant suicide has surfaced from Kota, Rajasthan, just days before the NEET-UG 2025 exam. A 23-year-old student from Delhi, Roshan Sharma, tragically died by suicide near the railway tracks in Kota, adding to the growing concern around student mental health in India’s coaching hub.

Wanted to Skip Exam, Take Another Year
The NEET aspirant suicide occurred only a week before the scheduled NEET-UG exam on May 4. Roshan had been living in a hostel in Kota’s Naya Nohra locality while preparing for the exam. According to police reports, he consumed a poisonous substance before his body was discovered by railway officials.
Roshan had informed his family that he was not confident about appearing for the 2025 NEET exam and wanted to skip it to prepare for another year. Despite showing academic promise—scoring between 550 and 600 marks in mock tests—he expressed feelings of inadequacy and anxiety.
His parents had recently visited him and offered to bring him back home to Delhi, but Roshan declined. Just a few days after they returned, news of his death reached them.
12th Case of NEET Aspirant Suicide in Kota This Year
Roshan’s death marks the 12th reported NEET aspirant suicide in Kota since January 2025. In 2024, the city saw 17 similar cases, sparking national concern. These incidents underscore the immense mental pressure placed on students preparing for competitive exams.

Kota has long been a hotspot for coaching institutes that prepare students for NEET and JEE. However, the high-stress environment, intense competition, and isolation from family often contribute to anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness among young aspirants.
Authorities and Experts Respond
The local police are treating Roshan’s case as a suspected suicide, and an investigation is ongoing. Experts have reiterated the importance of prioritizing mental health support in coaching hubs. Educational institutions and parents are being urged to monitor warning signs such as withdrawal, irritability, and expressions of helplessness. for more in this connect with Hindustan times
