Delhi University’s 12-Hour College Timing Sparks Protests

The 12 hour college timing recently introduced by Delhi University (DU) has triggered strong protests from both students and faculty members. As reported by Indian Express and India Today, the policy extends the operational hours of several colleges from 8 AM to 8 PM, aiming to accommodate more courses and activities. However, many in the DU community say the decision was made without proper consultation and raises serious concerns about safety, workload, and accessibility.

What Are DU’s New College Hours?

Under the new policy, certain Delhi University colleges will now remain open for 12 hours a day, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. According to Indian Express, DU officials have justified the move as a way to optimize infrastructure use, run multiple shifts, and expand academic and extracurricular offerings.

The university claims this extended schedule can help manage the growing student population and allow for flexible class timings, internships, and research projects. However, critics argue that these benefits do not outweigh the challenges it creates for both faculty and students.

Why Students and Faculty Oppose the Policy

Student groups and faculty associations have openly opposed the 12-hour college timing, calling it “impractical and unsafe.” Many say the decision was taken without a transparent discussion or adequate input from those it affects the most.

As India Today reports, faculty members fear the policy will increase their workload without additional pay or resources, while students worry about managing long commutes, extended campus hours, and late-night travel.

Concerns on Safety, Workload, and Transport

Safety is one of the biggest concerns. Many DU students, especially women, have raised alarms about having to attend classes or events in the evening, when public transport is less frequent and city streets are less safe.

Faculty members are also concerned about workload and burnout. Extending teaching hours without extra staff or facilities means professors may have to handle more classes and administrative duties in a single day. This could affect the quality of education and lead to stress for both teachers and students.

Transport is another major issue. Delhi’s traffic and limited evening public transport options make it difficult for students from far-off areas to attend late classes and return home safely.

Calls for Review and Inclusive Consultation

Both students and faculty unions are demanding that Delhi University immediately review the 12-hour college timing policy. They want the administration to hold inclusive consultations before implementing such significant changes.

Protesters are also urging the university to address safety measures, improve campus infrastructure, and provide additional staff support if extended hours are to be enforced.

Many believe that while DU’s intention to improve academic opportunities is commendable, the approach must be balanced with the well-being and safety of its community. As Indian Express highlights, a collaborative solution involving students, faculty, and administration is essential for any major policy shift to succeed.
