A new dynamic in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions has emerged. According to reports from ESPN Cricinfo and Cricbuzz, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are set to retain South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 crore. This amount exceeds the Rs 18 crore cap set by the IPL Governing Council for the first retention slot by Rs 5 crore. The retention rules allow franchises to retain players for amounts higher or lower than the designated slab, as long as the total retention purse, capped at Rs 75 crore, remains within the allowed limit.

As per reports, the IPL retention rules stipulate specific amounts for player retentions: Rs 18 crore for the first retention, Rs 14 crore for the second, Rs 11 crore for the third, Rs 18 crore for the fourth, Rs 14 crore for the fifth, and Rs 4 crore for uncapped players. However, franchises have the flexibility to distribute this retention budget among their players as they see fit.

For instance, a team can choose to pay more than Rs 18 crore for the first retention and less than Rs 11 crore for the third, as long as the total amount matches the Rs 43 crore set for three retentions (18 + 14 + 11). Even if a franchise retains five players for less than the allocated Rs 75 crore (out of the overall Rs 120 crore purse), the designated Rs 75 crore will still be deducted from their purse.

As quoted by Cricbuzz, “Retention deduction of the overall amount instead of the fee per player, in this case, will be 75 Crs irrespective of the actual amount paid to 5 players. If the total amount exceeds 75 Crs, then the actual amount will be deducted. If the amount is less, 75 Crs will still be deducted.”

This flexibility in distributing the retention fees allows franchises to negotiate higher or lower fees for key players without affecting the overall retention budget, offering them more strategic freedom in retaining top talent.
