A migrant laborer was shot in Tral, located in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pulwama district, marking the latest in a series of targeted attacks, according to a report by the Press Trust of India, which provided no further details.
Sources familiar with the incident identified the migrant worker as Pritam Singh from Uttar Pradesh. He was shot in Batgund, Tral. However, there has been no immediate confirmation from the J&K Police regarding this latest attack.
Singh was reported to be in stable condition after sustaining an injury to his hand. “We are ascertaining the details,” stated a police officer.
On Monday, the police dismissed “social media reports” claiming that the administration had instructed migrant workers to leave Kashmir. The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring security and creating a safe environment for all residents to pursue their livelihoods without fear or intimidation. They advised the public not to believe false information circulating on social media platforms.
On Sunday, a terror attack in J&K’s Ganderbal district claimed the lives of seven people, including a Kashmiri doctor, migrant laborers, and staff working on a tunnel along the Srinagar-Leh national highway. This marked the deadliest attack on civilians in the region since June 9, when nine pilgrims were killed after terrorists opened fire on their bus in Reasi, causing it to plunge into a valley.
The Ganderbal attack was the first major incident since J&K was stripped of its semi-autonomous status with the nullification of Article 370 of the Constitution in 2019 and divided into two Union territories.
Sunday’s attack was the fourth such incident targeting civilians. On October 18, the bullet-riddled body of Ashok Chauhan, a 37-year-old laborer from Bihar, was found in the Shopian district. Another migrant worker from Bihar was killed in Bijbehara on April 17.
Two months earlier, Amritpal Singh, a laborer from Amritsar, was killed in Srinagar on February 7. Rohit Mashi, another migrant worker injured in the same attack, succumbed to his injuries three days later.
