Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly Election Dates 2024: On Tuesday, October 15, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for the upcoming Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections. Maharashtra will vote on November 20, while Jharkhand will hold elections in two phases on November 13 and November 20. The counting of votes for both states will take place on November 23.
Dates for Filing Nominations:
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced that the Gazette notification for the Maharashtra Assembly election will be issued on October 22. The last date for filing nominations is October 29, with the scrutiny of nominations scheduled for October 30. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until November 4.
The term of the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will conclude on November 26, while Jharkhand’s assembly term ends on January 5 next year.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, in a press conference, stated that Maharashtra has 9.63 crore eligible voters, while Jharkhand has 2.6 crore eligible voters for the upcoming elections.
Bye-elections and Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024: Key Details
The Election Commission announced that bye-elections for 47 assembly seats and the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat will take place on November 13.
In Maharashtra, the 2024 assembly elections will witness a major contest between the Maha Vikas Aghadi (Shiv Sena-UBT, NCP-Sharad Pawar faction, Congress) and the ruling Mahayuti Alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena-Eknath Shinde faction, NCP-Ajit Pawar faction).
In the 2019 assembly election, the BJP secured 105 seats, while the Congress won 44 seats. However, in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s performance saw a decline, winning only 9 out of 48 seats, compared to 23 in the previous term, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi won 30 seats.
Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024: Key Details
The term of the Jharkhand Assembly ends on January 5, 2025, with elections for its 81 constituencies (44 General, 9 SC, 28 ST) expected by December 2024.
