Rishabh Pant is expected to be released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2025 auction

In a major development from the Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant is reportedly set to enter the IPL 2025 mega auction. Pant, who has spent his entire career with the Delhi franchise, is no longer being considered as the captain. This comes amidst a significant overhaul of Delhi Capitals’ backroom staff, following the departures of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly. It is expected that major changes will extend to the playing unit as well.

According to a report from the Times of India, Pant is highly likely to be part of the auction pool. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is reportedly leading the list of franchises keen to acquire him, with Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings also expressing interest in bringing Pant on board as their captain.

Earlier, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal had hinted at a few key players the franchise was eager to retain ahead of the 2025 season. This report seems to contradict Jindal’s earlier statement this month.

“Yes, we definitely have to retain some very good players in our team. After discussing with GMR and our director of cricket, Sourav Ganguly, decisions will be made,” Jindal had said in an interview with IANS. He further emphasized, “Rishabh Pant will definitely be retained. We also have Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Kuldeep Yadav, Abishek Porel, Mukesh Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed, all of whom are excellent players.”

Just a few days ago, Delhi Capitals, co-owned by JSW and GMR, appointed Hemang Badani as Head Coach (IPL) and Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket (IPL), signaling further shifts within the team structure.

Franchises are expected to finalize their retention lists by the end of this month.
