Rajinikanth look in film Vettaiyan

New Delhi:
Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s film Vettaiyan hit theatres on October 10, making an impressive debut at the box office with a strong opening of ₹30 crore across India, according to Sacnilk. A major chunk of the earnings came from its Tamil shows, which grossed ₹26.15 crore. The film’s Telugu version collected ₹3.2 crore, while the Hindi version brought in ₹60 lakh and the Kannada version made ₹50 lakh on its first day. The movie recorded an overall Tamil occupancy rate of 59.43% on day one. Directed by TJ Gnanavel, the film features a star-studded cast, including Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, and VJ Rakshan.

Vettaiyan marks the much-anticipated on-screen reunion of Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, who last appeared together in the 1991 film Hum. During the audio launch event of Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth reminisced about a difficult phase in Amitabh Bachchan’s life when he faced a financial crisis. He shared how Big B had to sell his Juhu home and other properties in Mumbai, and worked 18 hours a day to pay off his debts.

Rajinikanth revealed, “He did everything—ads, endorsements—people in the Bombay industry laughed at him. For three years, despite facing many health issues, he worked tirelessly for 18 hours a day and cleared all his dues. Not just that, he bought back his old house and acquired two more houses in the same lane. That’s Amitabh Bachchan for you! He is 82 now and still works for 10 hours a day.”

In an NDTV review, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Vettaiyan 2.5 out of 5 stars. He mentioned, “Orbiting within and around the formulaic, writer-director TJ Gnanavel introduces a few novel thematic elements and gives them a reasonable shot in Vettaiyan. The outcome may be a bit uneven in terms of pace and emphasis, but overall, the film puts together something that isn’t entirely forgettable.”

Vettaiyan tells the story of Kanyakumari SP Athiyan, a dedicated police officer who takes on a challenging drug case in his region. What begins as a simple drug bust soon unravels into a much larger conspiracy, intertwining Athiyan’s personal life and his social responsibilities. The film is produced by A Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran under Sun Pictures.
