The Government of India has introduced Silver Hallmarking with a unique HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) system, aiming to bring more trust and transparency into the silver market. This move by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is designed to protect consumers, check fraud, and ensure that purity standards are maintained across the country.
Overview of New Silver Hallmarking
The new scheme introduces HUID Silver Hallmarking as a voluntary initiative for now, but it may become mandatory in the future. Just like gold hallmarking, this process certifies the purity of silver items, giving buyers confidence about what they are purchasing. The scheme aligns with the government’s vision of making the jewellery sector more transparent and reliable.
HUID Code Adds Digital Traceability
Every hallmarked silver article will now carry a unique six-digit alphanumeric HUID code. This ensures digital traceability, making it nearly impossible to replace or duplicate genuine certified pieces. With this system, buyers can verify details such as purity and jeweller’s information at any point of time.
BIS Care App for Checking Purity
To make the process consumer-friendly, the government has integrated the system with the BIS Care App. Shoppers can simply scan the HUID code to confirm authenticity and check the BIS Silver Standard grade of their item. This provides a quick, tech-driven method to prevent fraud.
Seven Grades Under IS 2112:2025
The hallmarking is based on seven grades of silver purity under IS 2112:2025 standards. This means every silver item, whether jewellery or utensils, will be tested and certified according to strict quality benchmarks. Such standardization will create uniformity in the silver market and reduce disputes between buyers and sellers.
230 Centres for Testing Nationwide
The BIS has already set up more than 230 Assaying and Hallmarking Centres across India. These centres will test silver articles before stamping them with the hallmark and unique HUID code. This wide network ensures accessibility for jewellers and fairness for consumers across urban and rural regions.
Consumer Protection and Fraud Check
The introduction of Silver Hallmarking is a big step for consumer protection. Until now, many buyers faced cheating in terms of purity claims. With HUID Silver Hallmarking, every piece can be digitally verified, bringing transparency and trust to the silver market.
Future Move Towards Mandatory Use
Although the current launch is voluntary, experts believe the government may soon make HUID Silver Hallmarking mandatory, similar to gold hallmarking. This would further strengthen the jewellery sector, making India’s silver market globally reliable and consumer friendly.
